In seventh NFL season, Jonathan Jones scores first TD
New England Patriots defensive back Jonathan Jones scored his first NFL touchdown on Saturday in his 93rd regular-season game.
The former Auburn standout intercepted a pass that bounced off the hands of Indianapolis Colts tight end Kylen Granson and ran 17 yards to the end zone as the Patriots took a 26-3 lead with 3:59 left in the fourth quarter at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
That ended up being the final score of the game as the Patriots improved to 5-4.
Jones also had a big play in the first half when he blocked Matt Haack’s punt with 6:58 left in the second quarter. New England wound up with the football at the Indianapolis 2-yard line, and quarterback Mac Jones threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to running back Rhamondre Stevenson two snaps later as the Patriots took a 13-0 lead.
The interception was Jonathan Jones’ second of the 2022 season and the ninth of his career. The touchdown return was the second-longest of his career. Jones had a 28-yard interception return after picking off quarterback Andrew Luck in a 38-24 victory over the Colts on Oct. 4, 2018.
Jones’ Sunday interception came against Sam Ehlinger, the first of the quarterback’s NFL career.
