Iconic Gulf Shores restaurant closing after 67 years

Hazel’s Nook, an iconic Gulf Shores breakfast and lunch spot that has fed generations of Alabama Gulf Coast vacationers since 1957, is closing after 67 years in business, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

“Hazel’s has been a Gulf Shores landmark where guests could share stories, enjoy a great meal, and make memories since 1957,” the Facebook post reads. “We are grateful for our loyal customers, employees, and community members who have contributed to the fabric of our family restaurant over the years. Thank you for 67 great years! We look forward to seeing everyone around town.”

The post includes a collage of photographs from Hazel’s, along with the caption, “Memories: 1957-2024.”

The restaurant’s last day in business “as of now” will be Monday, July 15, according to a response from Hazel’s that appears in the comments on the post.

The Facebook post did not give a reason for Hazel’s closing.

A throwback diner that has been around since Gulf Shores was a sleepy little beach town, Hazel’s has survived multiple hurricanes, recessions and a global pandemic.

“Going back to Hazel’s Nook brings back memories of family vacations to Gulf Shores, when we would pile into our dad’s hulking Ford LTD and head to Hazel’s for pancakes and patty sausage, country ham and scrambled eggs, bottomless cups of coffee (for the grown-ups) and those tiny glasses of orange juice (for us kids),” we wrote in a 2023 AL.com roundup of classic Gulf Shores landmarks that have been around for decades.

“These days, we’re more inclined to skip the breakfast buffet and instead order the create-your-own cheese omelet or the BLT sandwich, but it’s that trip back in time that we’re really going for.

“Hazel’s has been serving hearty breakfasts to hungry beachcombers since 1957, and looking around, the place doesn’t appear to have changed a whole lot over the decades. And that’s what we love about it.”

Hazel’s Nook also appeared on AL.com’s 2023 list of the Top 10 breakfast spots in Alabama.

Baldwin County restaurateur Richard Schwartz — who founded another venerable beach landmark, Doc’s Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar, in Orange Beach, bought Hazel’s Hook its eponymous owner more than 40 years ago.

“In 1980, I bought Hazel’s Nook from Hazel Scruggs,” Schwartz told AL.com’s Lawrence Specker last year. “She stayed with me two years. . . . She sold it to me, and she financed it for me.

“I thought she liked me a whole lot and that’s why she worked two summers, just coming in and being cashier. But what she was really doing was making sure I wasn’t going to screw it up.”
