Iconic Alabama band back in the studio: ‘Working on some exciting stuff!’

Alabama Shakes are up to something.

The indie rock band, who in December played together in public for the first time since 2017, has shared new photos of singer/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg and bassist Zack Cockrell in a recording studio together.

Posted on the band’s social media, the pics are captioned, “Working on some exciting stuff!” The photos include images of Howard, Fogg and Cockrell playing their guitars.

The post doesn’t indicate exactly what Alabama Shakes, who reunited for their Dec. 18 live set for a fundraiser in Tuscaloosa sans original drummer Steve Johnson, is working on.

Could it be new material?

Or fleshing out outtakes from the Shakes’ sophomore album “Sound & Color,” which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year?

Or maybe a bit of both?

Stay tuned.

The Grammy-winning Athens-founded band is known for soul-tinged rock songs like “Hold On,” “Always Alright” and “Gimme All Your Love.”

In Tuscaloosa, Howard, who during the band’s hiatus established a successful solo career, Fogg and Cockrell were joined onstage by drummer Lewis Wright and longtime touring member Ben Tanner.
