‘I will kill you:’ 2 men indicted federally in violent carjacking of Birmingham Lyft driver
Two Birmingham men have been charged federally in the 2024 carjacking of a Lyft driver.
Kyone D’Mias Harris and Brandon Taylor Ezell, both 24, are charged with carjacking and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, according to a Tuesday announcement by Northern District of Alabama U.S. Prim Escalona and FBI Special Agent in Charge Carlton Peeples.
They are among four people recently indicted on separate carjackings in Jefferson County.
The carjacking of the Lyft driver happened on Oct. 5, 2024, in Birmingham.
According to federal documents, a few days before that happened Harris and Ezell used the Lyft application to schedule a ride and were picked up by the driver, identified only as “S.B.” in the driver’s 2023 Toyota Corolla. The suspects then asked for the driver’s personal phone number, telling him they wanted to bypass the Lyft app and schedule rides directly with him in the future.
On Oct. 5, Ezell and his girlfriend called S.B. for a ride. They asked to be picked up from an apartment complex near Fourth Avenue West and 14th Street W. in Birmingham. Ezell and his girlfriend then directed the driver to pick up Harris at another apartment complex near 30th Avenue North and 31st Street North.
S.B. drove them to a gas station in the 3400 block of 26th Street North where all three went inside while S.B. remained in his car.
Harris, authorities stated, then removed a gun from his waistband and handed it to Ezell, who put the gun in his waistband and returned to the Lyft car.
At that point, the indictment states, Ezell put the gun to S.B.’s head and said, “Get out of the car or I will kill you.”
The driver complied, and the suspects left in the Toyota, also taking S.B.’s phone, wallet and $100 in cash.
Both were also arrested on state charges, court records show.
In an unrelated case, Charles Avery Pruitt, 22, has been indicted federally on charges of carjacking and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime for the July 10 carjacking of a Dodge Charger.
Dearrius Dontrell Pace, 30, has been indicted on federal charges of charges of carjacking and kidnapping. That crime happened on July 16, 2024.
Pace is accused of stealing a Buick Lucerne at gunpoint.
Both Pace and Pruitt are also charged in state court.
