‘I have no interviews’: Rich Rodriguez shoots down reports of contact with West Virginia
Jacksonville State coach Rich Rodriguez was quick to shut down a report of him setting up an interview for the West Virginia head coaching vacancy on Friday.
“I have no interviews,” the veteran coach said after Jax State’s 52-12 win over Western Kentucky in the Conference USA championship game.
“I have nothing scheduled, other than I’m going to have a great day with Miss Rita and the kids and Roxie and Rambo tomorrow, absolutely great day on Sunday, watching a little film, and then on Monday, getting starting to get ready for this great bowl game that we’re going to be in right here a couple weeks.”
Neal Brown was fired from his position with the program after six seasons on Dec. 1; the former Troy coach went 37-35 during his tenure with the Mountaineers.
Rodriguez, a native of Grant Town, West Virginia, spent seven seasons as West Virginia’s head coach and led the program to its best stretch of success; he posted a 60-26 record.
The coach also had stints as head coach at West Virginia programs Salem and Glenville State.
“The reports, just rumors, right? Total rumors,” Rodriguez said. “My focus has been on these guys at Jax State, and they’ll continue to be. If any coach gets rumored for a job, it’s probably because his players and his coaches are doing pretty good. So, if I’m rumored for any job, then it’s because these guys and their teammates are doing a good job.”
Jax State (9-4), which earned its first conference championship at the FBS level, will await its bowl destination that is expected to be announced Sunday.
