Hyundai’s plant in Montgomery to roll out 1st electric vehicle today

The Hyundai plant in Montgomery will roll out its first electric vehicle at a ceremony today.

The Genesis Electrified GV70 SUV will be the first Genesis model assembled outside of South Korea.

Public officials and news crews will observe the installation of the SUV’s battery at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant.

Today’s celebration comes 10 months after Hyundai announced that it would build the Electrified GV70 SUV and a hybrid version of the Santa Fe at the Montgomery plant. The company announced an investment of $300 million and the creation of 200 jobs to make the electric SUVs in Montgomery.

Mercedes-Benz will also produce electric vehicles in Alabama — the EQS SUV and the EQE SUV. In March 2022, Mercedes opened its electric battery plant in Bibb County, four and a half miles from its assembly plant in Tuscaloosa County.

This story will be updated after this morning’s ceremony.
