Hurts, Tagovailoa hope for another Tide win over Georgia
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have some history with Georgia.
In the CFP national-championship game for the 2017 season, Tagovailoa came in for Hurts and rallied Alabama to a 26-23 overtime victory against the Bulldogs.
In the SEC Championship Game for the 2018 season, Hurts came in for Tagovailoa and rallied the Crimson Tide to a 35-28 victory over Georgia.
On Saturday, the quarterbacks will be limited to cheering for Alabama as it plays Georgia in the SEC Championship Game again.
Tagovailoa famously connected with wide receiver DeVonta Smith (who remains teammates with Hurts in Philadelphia) on a 41-yard touchdown pass to beat Georgia in the national-championship game. Last week, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe connected with wide receiver Isaiah Bond on a 31-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-goal throw with 32 seconds to play to lift the Tide to a 27-24 victory over Auburn.
“That was crazy,” Tagovailoa said on Wednesday. “Roll Tide.”
“Roll Tide” also served as Tagovailoa’s preview of Saturday’s SEC Championship Game.
Hurts said he’d been watching Milroe’s development this season.
“I’ve been keeping up with the things that Alabama’s been doing and how Milroe’s been playing,” Hurts said, “and it’s exciting to see what he’s been able to do and take advantage of his opportunities when his phone has rang earlier in the year. Excited for him, pulling for him, obviously.”
Hurts has six teammates who played for Georgia. He also has eight teammates who played for Alabama. On Wednesday, Hurts said he didn’t have any locker-room bets on the game yet.
“We’ll see what the week brings,” Hurts said during his press conference. “Can’t do that here. Get in trouble.”
Tagovailoa said it was on in the Dolphins’ locker room, though.
“If Georgia wins, I’ve got to wear Georgia things,” Tagovailoa said. “And if Alabama wins, those guys have to wear Alabama things.”
Tagovailoa has four teammates who are Alabama alumni and two who are Georgia alumni.

As a freshman, Hurts won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2016, when Alabama won the SEC Championship Game over Florida 54-16 and the Peach Bowl over Washington 24-7 before falling in the CFP national-championship game to Clemson 35-31.
In 2017, Hurts again led the Crimson Tide to the CFP title contest. But with Alabama trailing Georgia 13-0 at halftime, Tagovailoa took over at quarterback, and the Tide rallied for an overtime victory.
Tagovailoa kept the starting spot in 2018. But in the SEC Championship Game, Hurts led Alabama to touchdowns on its final two possessions with Tagovailoa out of the game to lift the Tide past Georgia.
Tagovailoa finished as the runner-up to Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray in the balloting for the 2018 Heisman Trophy. In 2019, Hurts took over as the Sooners quarterback after Murray left as the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Hurts finished as the runner-up to LSU QB Joe Burrow in the balloting for the 2019 Heisman Trophy.
Since Tagovailoa joined the Dolphins as the fifth pick and Hurts joined the Eagles as the 53rd pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, each quarterback has started 45 regular-season games.
Tagovailoa and Miami visit the Washington Commanders at noon CST Sunday. Hurts and Philadelphia host the San Francisco 49ers at 3:25 p.m. Sunday.
