Huntsville’s MidCity movie theater: what’s the status?

Is there an update on the new movie theatre planned at MidCity in Huntsville?

In the days before COVID changed our life, the largest movie screen in the state of Alabama was planned for Huntsville’s MidCity, scheduled to open the summer of 2021.

That announcement came in mid-December of 2019. A lot has changed since then, including those plans.

“There’s no update,” said Nadia Niakossary, Senior Director of Development for RCP Companies, which is the developer of MidCity Huntsville. “It’s still in the design phase.”

At the time of the announcement, AL.com writer Paul Gattis reported it would be known as Touchstar Luxury Cinemas MidCity. The state-of-the-art theater would be 50,000 square feet with 14 wall-to-wall screens that includes the state’s largest silver screen, 4k laser projection with 3D viewing as well as Dolby Atmos and DTX immersive sound.

According to its website, once complete, the MidCity development will include 350,000 square feet of retail, dining, and entertainment space; approximately 400,000 square feet of high-tech office space; 1,600 residential units; and approximately 650 hotel rooms.
