Huntsville’s Blue Origin plant keeps growing, $8.4 million permit issued

The city of Huntsville issued a permit this month for an $8.4 million project at Blue Origin’s facility at 646 James Record Road.

The project is the most expensive work issued a permit in Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties since the end of October, according to Southern Exposure Information.

Overall, 377 permits were issued between Oct. 30 and Nov. 20 totaling almost $93 million in the area. Huntsville issued 212 of the permits, totaling $53.8 million. Madison County issued 103 for $23.7 million.

Madison issued 21 for $6.7 million. Decatur issued 16 for $3.8 million. Athens issued 20 for $3.6 million. Priceville issued five for $1 million.

Blue Origin is undergoing its third major expansion in three years. Fite Construction of Decatur is listed as the project’s builder.

The aerospace company owned by Jeff Bezos, Blue Origin has emerged as one of the top commercial spaceflight companies as the country has placed a renewed effort on returning to the moon and eventually to Mars. The company’s Huntsville presence includes a rocket building plant in Cummings Research Park.
