Huntsville planners seek to keep ‘junkyards’ off the Parkway

Memorial Parkway has become ground zero for Huntsville’s growth.

Mixed-use buildings such as Constellation, Eclipse and Front Row are popping up in areas around the Von Braun Center and Big Spring Park.

Hotels and retail are on the way up around the renovation of Joe Davis Stadium.

What do city officials not want to see pop up? Junkyards for one.

It may sound a bit far-fetched for a city seeing shiny new buildings going up every day. But current zoning allows for heavy industry with such unsightly businesses as junkyards and outdoor businesses peddling merchandise along sections of one of Huntsville’s main corridors.

One of the first steps to prevent eyesores from going up along Memorial Parkway is the rezoning of a more than 80-acre site east of the Parkway, south of Clinton Street and north of Bob Wallace Avenue from residence 1-B, general business and heavy industry to residence 2A and highway business districts.
