Huntsville planners give thumbs up to 1,400 apartment units

The Huntsville Planning Commission approved nearly 1,400 apartment units at various stages of development at its meeting on Tuesday night at city hall.

That includes two apartment communities with more than 900 units combined.

The commission approved the layout of the largest complex on the agenda, the 577-unit Overview Park community west of Zierdt Road and south of Martin Road in the fast-growing southwestern part of the city.

City planner Keven Bernard said the complex will likely be built in phases. The community will consist of traditional apartments and townhomes.

“I suspect they are going to start more toward the entrance,” he said. “They haven’t determined a phase just yet. But they can only build 199 units if they don’t have a second point of ingress-egress. … Once they reach 299, they’ll have to have two points of ingress-egress.”

The community is being developed by the Dawson Company. Schoel Engineering is also involved with the project.
