Huntsville has a video rental store again. Yes, a video rental store
Walking into Big Mix is like stepping back in time, in the best way, and not just because the guy behind the counter’s wearing a “Clerks” T-shirt and an episode of “The X-Files” is flickering on a TV screen. Shelves in this Huntsville, Alabama shop are filled with thousands of DVDs and Blue-rays for rent. Yes, for rent. For the first time in a while, Huntsville has a video rental store.
Located on the edge of downtown, in a house at 309 Dallas St., Big Mix Video offers around 4,000 titles for rent with another 3,000 soon to be added. Owners David Gillespie (the guy in the “Clerks” tee) and Ellis Barnard, who are married, are big believers in physical media. In addition to renting videos, Big Mix sells used records, CDs, cassettes and books. They sell vintage clothing too.
The video rental selection ranges from the obvious (“Kindergarten Cop”) to the obscure (“Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam”), and from the recent (“Bodies Bodies Bodies”) to the vintage (“The Day The Earth Stood Still’). There’s a nifty swath of music documentaries (”Unknown Passage: Dead Moon Story”), horror (“Day of the Dead”) and entire section of “Sharksploitation” (more “Jaws” and “Jaws” knockoffs than you can throw a bucket of chum at). There’s also a local section, with titles like 1979 sci-fi film “The Ravagers” which was filmed in Huntsville. Big Mix’s name is a nod to the business’ goal of offering a wide variety.
