Huntsville clarifies language on vehicle search for cell phone driving violation

Huntsville Police cannot use a traffic stop for a violation of its hands-free driving ordinance as an excuse to search vehicles for other violations.

The Huntsville City Council passed an amendment to the ordinance Thursday to make sure officers and the public were aware of that fact. The ordinance went into effect at the beginning of the year.

City Administrator John Hamilton said that was always the intent of the ordinance, but the police department sought an amendment with much clearer language on the issue.
