Huntsville City Hall opens today
The public is invited inside the big new Huntsville City Hall today after a dedication and ribbon cutting.
Mayor Tommy Battle’s office said the official opening and celebration will begin at 10 a.m. The new City Hall is located downtown at 305 Fountain Circle.
After remarks and ribbon-cutting, guided pubic tours will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon. On the tour are nine new public art installations and the artists who created them.
ArtsHuntsville, the city’s leading public arts organization, will also have docent-led tours June 8, 13 and Aug. 10. Local artists will also be present.
Public parking is available in the two downtown parking decks at 116 Clinton Ave. E and 312 Fountain Circle SW.
Present and celebrating with the mayor will be:
* City Council President David Little;
* City Administrator John Hamilton;
* Jeffrey Brewer, CEO of building designers Goodwyn Mills & Cawood;
* Brendan McCormick, vice president & general manager of builder Turner Construction
* Arts Huntsville Executive Director Allison Dillon-Juken.
The new building’s address is across the street from the old city hall that overlooks Big Spring Park. The old city hall is coming down to make more room in the popular park.
The early park was built around the “big spring” that made Huntsville’s settlement possible. The spring and area around it were settled in 1805 by city namesake John Hunt, a Virginia Revolutionary War veteran.
