Huntsville city council elects newest member as president

The newest member of the Huntsville city council is now the leader of the Huntsville City Council.

During its annual officer elections held Thursday, the city council elected David Little to be president – less than 13 months after he was elected to office.

The election, coming at the end of Thursday’s meeting, marked a sort of double victory for Little. Earlier in the meeting, the council approved his proposed ordinance to prohibit drivers from handling cell phones.

“It’s an honor,” Little said. “First year in and to be in this position, it’s a little daunting too. But I care about this organization, care about the council, care about the community. I just hopefully run efficient meetings once I get schooled up on Robert’s Rules of Order.”

As president, Little will preside over council meetings but will also handle council administrative chores and work closely with Mayor Tommy Battle and his administration.

Councilwoman Jennie Robinson nominated Little for president while Councilman Bill Kling nominated outgoing President John Meredith and Councilman Devyn Keith nominated Kling. Little won the 3-2 for president with Robinson, Keith and Little voting in his favor and Meredith and Kling opposing.

Robinson was elected president pro tem and Kling third presiding officer.

“I want to communicate with everybody and hopefully maintain good relationships like Mr. Keith said,” said Little, referring to remarks Keith made before the officer elections were held. “Not butt our heads together but we need to be willing to work together.”
