Grace United Methodist Church will not go through the condemnation process for a sewer easement for an expansion of the Village of Providence.

A condemnation hearing had been scheduled for Feb. 13, according to Kristi Kelly, head of the church’s trustees who participated in the negotiation. But the hearing was cancelled after an apparent agreement was reached, according to both Kelly and Shan Cook, director of the city’s Water Pollution Control.

“As of this date, we are still waiting on final paperwork and payment to be completed,” Kelly said. She said the church initially requested to not go through the condemnation process, but the city felt it was necessary.

The sewer line that will run through the church’s property along Indian Creek will serve more than 100 homes expected to be developed in phases 14 and 15 of the Village of Providence. The phases were approved by the Huntsville Planning Commission last September.

Members of the church of about 600 were concerned the sewer line through their property will threaten their efforts to preserve a 20-acre wooded area the church owns along the creek, which it hopes to use for community outdoor recreation.
