Huntsville basketball star J.D. Gossett headed to Samford

Huntsville star and former Lipscomb signee J.D. Gossett will now follow head coach Lennie Acuff to Samford, he announced on social media Friday night.

Gossett originally signed with Lipscomb on Nov. 14, but was granted his release by Lipscomb and the NCAA on Thursday following Acuff’s move to Samford. The 6-foot-5 guard visited Samford on Friday.

Acuff, a native of Huntsville and longtime coach at Alabama-Huntsville, was announced as the next coach at Samford on Wednesday after six seasons in Nashville.

Gossett also received offers from UAH and Central Arkansas before committing to Lipscomb out of high school. Both offers came from Central Arkansas coach John Shulman, who was also a former head coach at UAH.

The move also reunites Gossett with former teammate Caleb Harrison, who entered the transfer portal following the departure of Bucky McMillan — now at Texas A&M — but withdrew following the hire of Acuff.

Gossett scored 21 points against Hoover in the Class 7A Northeast Regional final, going 8-for-17 from the field.

He finished his time at Huntsville as the school’s all-time wins leader, breaking the previous record held by Harrison.

Gossett finished the season for Huntsville averaging 15.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4 assists per game, shooting 63 percent from the field and adding 72 assists. He scored a career 1,067 points during his time with the Panthers.

As a senior at Huntsville this season, he claimed first-team all-state honors in Class 7A and is a finalist for Class 7A Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball from the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

He also played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, where he scored 11 points and led the team in steals (3) and assists (5), with his assists marking a game-high in the 91-85 win.
