Huntsville Animal Services seeks to âClear the Shelterâ in August
Huntsville Animal Services is trying to alleviate overcrowding at its shelter on Triana Boulevard by participating in the nationwide “Clear the Shelters” campaign through the remainder of the month.
Adoption fees for adult dogs and cats have been waived at the shelter through Aug. 31.
“We’re still seeing high numbers of unwanted pets in our shelter,” Animal Services Director Karen Sheppard said in a news release. “We see a higher intake in summer, but this year, the doors were blown off and we’re struggling.”
There were 137 animals at the shelter last month, Sheppard said in an earlier interview with Lede. At one point, the shelter was completely out of kennels for cats. There were 73 dogs at the time and 64 cats.
Sheppard told the Lede that Animal Services would prefer around 40 cats and between 50 and 60 dogs. She said the kennel is full of kittens in June, July and August.
