Human skull moved by dog in east Birmingham belonged to victim of fatal shooting
An examination of the human skull found earlier this week in east Birmingham showed the victim had been shot, police announced Thursday.
The discovery was made just after 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 1300 block of Fifth Place N.W.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the skull was discovered by a homeowner on the shoulder of the roadway next to his residence.
It is believed the skull was moved to where it was found by the homeowner’s dog, but the original location of the skull is unknown.
Yates said a search of the area around the residence found no other human remains.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the medical examination of the skull showed the victim had been shot.
The victim has not been identified.
The coroner’s ruling marks the city’s 105th homicide this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 132 homicides including the 105 in Birmingham.
