Hugh Freeze says Auburn’s offense better but one thing still wrong

Auburn jumped out to a 24-0, first-half lead over Louisiana Monroe on Saturday.

Hugh Freeze was asked at halftime about the offense’s performance against the Sun Belt opponent.

“Better,” the Auburn coach said at halftime. “Better. Still, a few inconsistent plays that I think the progression on our reads are wrong.”

Payton Thorne was 16 of 24 for 188 yards and three scores.

“I think we can run the football,” Freeze said. “We’re trying to throw it a little, but I think Payton had a solid pass. He could’ve been a little better.”

The Tigers rolled up 292 yards in the half, while the defense held Monroe to just 70 yards.

“Not a bad half at all,” Freeze said. “We scored points in every possession, but one when we were backed up. Pretty pleased.”

Freeze said he hopes to see other guys get a shot at quarterback in the second half.

“I would love for that to happen,” he said. “We’re careful as coaches not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but, if we can come out and get a couple of good possessions, I sure would like to see some other guys get some action.”
