Hugh Freeze gets raise, contract extension at Liberty
Liberty’s Hugh Freeze has agreed to another contract extension through the 2030 season, one that will reportedly make him the highest-paid Group of 5 coach in the country.
According to multiple reports, Freeze will earn nearly $5 million per season under the terms of his new deal, up from $4 million plus in an extension he signed just a year ago. Because Liberty is a private school, financial terms were not publicly disclosed.
“We are grateful for Coach Freeze’s outstanding leadership of Liberty Football and the positive influence he has on our student-athletes,” Liberty athletics director Ian McCaw said. “Liberty Football is realizing the vision that was cast for it decades ago and we are excited that Coach Freeze will lead the program into the future.”
The 53-year-old Freeze is 33-12 in four seasons at Liberty, including 7-1 this year. He went 47-25 in five seasons at Ole Miss before he resigned just prior to the 2017 season amid personal conduct and NCAA-related controversy.
Nevertheless, Freeze is a popular candidate for several high-profile coaching jobs that are currently open or might come open in the coming weeks, including Auburn. Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated is reporting that Freeze’s new buyout at Liberty would not be prohibitive for any Power 5 school that wished to hire him.
