Hueytown police caught on video punching man at gas station sparks investigation

An investigation is underway after video surfaced on social media over the weekend of a Hueytown police officer punching a man at a gas station.

The incident happened Friday night at Raceway on Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive.

The video shows two officers approach a man who was standing by a gas pump. The man appeared to be wringing his hands as the officers walked to him.

As one of the officers reaches toward the man, he pushes away the officer’s hand. The officer then punches him in the face and knocks him to the ground.

He is then rolled onto his stomach and handcuffed.

Hueytown Police Chief Mike Yarbrough said the officer is on paid leave pending the ongoing investigation.

“We are aware of an incident involving the use of physical force,’’ Yarbrough said. “Although there were no firearms used, it is being investigated.”

The chief said on the advice of the city’s attorney, he could not release details about why the man was being arrested. The man’s name has not been released.

“It’s a personnel matter,’’ he said, “and that’s all we can say right now.”
