HS volleyball update: McGill-Toolen wins 17th straight, captures Blalock Tournament

McGill-Toolen ran is volleyball winning streak to 17 straight matches with nine wins last week, including capturing the Margaret Blalock Tournament title at Homewood.

The last loss for Class 7A top-ranked McGill-Toolen (42-8) came to Class 6A No. 1 Mountain Brook in the championship of Spain Park’s HeffStrong Tournament on Sept. 24.

The Dirty Dozen swept Baker 3-0 in regular season play on Tuesday then downed Mountain Brook in five sets on Thursday.

McGill-Toolen beat Ramsay, Hartselle and Tuscaloosa County – all 2-0 in best-of-three play – and Chelsea 2-1 in Homewood’s Blalock pool action. The Dirty Dozen then swept Huntsville, Auburn and Chelsea in Gold Bracket play to earn the title.

Anna Grace Sparks led the attack with 101 kills, adding 49 digs, 8 blocks and 5 aces while Mamie Fromdahl had 119 assists, 32 digs and 10 aces and Laura Boykin also had 119 assists with 32 digs and 5 aces.

Juliet Galla had 109 digs and 12 aces and Riley Carter had 55 kills and 13 blocks

CLASS 7A

Second-ranked Enterprise (37-7) was 6-2 with regular season wins over Providence Christian, Houston Academy and Jeff Davis and a loss to Trinity and beating Good Hope, Arab and Pelham and losing to Bob Jones in the Shrimp Fest.

Lily Rhoades broke 1,000 career digs (1,231) while Heather Holtz had 156 assists, 46 digs, 12 kills and 7 aces, Jadyn Britton had 75 kills and Alivia Freeman had 43 kills and 18 blocks.

Fourth-ranked Bob Jones (44-6) won eight matches last week, including earning the Shrimp Fest Tournament championship. The Patriots beat third-ranked Vestavia Hills in regular season play then beat Bayshore Christian, DAR, Northridge, Thompson, second-ranked Enterprise, Spanish Fort and Westminster Christian in the title match.

Kennedy Vaughn had 111 kills, 11 aces, 7 blocks and 33 digs, Meg Jarrett had 94 digs, 11 aces and 15 assists, Riley Lovell had 208 assists, 62 digs, 5 aces and 5 blocks and Eliza Tyrrell had 55 kills, 4 aces and 9 blocks.

Fifth-ranked Spain Park was 3-2 with wins over St. Paul’s and Oak Mountain and losses to Mountain Brook and Hazel Green.

Emily Breazeale had 64 kills, 10 blocks and 36 digs, Brooklyn Allison had 61 digs with a 2.55 passer rating and 5 aces, Ashley Fowler had 36 digs and 5 aces, Reagan Gilbert had 34 kills, Macie Thompson had 12 blocks, Lily Johnson had 67 assists and Haley Thompson had 58 assists.

Sixth-ranked Huntsville (31-11) was 2-3 with wins over Trinity and Oxford and losses to Hazel Green, Oak Mountain and McGill-Toolen.

Ella Hall had 4 aces, 36 kills, 6 blocks and 12 digs and Keara Bowen had 15 kills, 9 blocks and 5 digs.

Eighth-ranked Hoover (31-15) won five matches last week, beating Jasper in regular season action and sweeping Auburn, John Carroll, Daphne and Mountain Brook at the Blalock.

Maggie Harris had 85 assists (surpassing 1,000 for the season), 20 digs, 9 aces and 14 kills, Raegan James had 33 digs, 17 kills and 2 aces, Bella Guenster had 50 digs and 4 aces and Kendyl Mitchell had 23 kills.

Ninth-ranked Chelsea (32-13) was 6-3 with a regular season loss to Vestavia Hills and beating host Homewood, Mountain Brook, Tuscaloosa County, Ramsay, Oak Mountain and Hartselle and losing to McGill-Toolen twice, including the championship match of the Blalock.

Emma Pohlmann had 79 kills, 5 aces, 80 digs (surpassing 1,000 career digs) and 5 blocks, Lauren Buchanan had 68 kills, 16 aces, 58 digs and 8 blocks and Madison Moore had 125 assists, 29 digs, 14 aces and 3 blocks.

No. 10 St. Paul’s (30-12) was 4-3 with a regular season win over Davidson and beating host Homewood, John Carroll and Hartselle and losing to Spain Park, Hazel Green and Trinity in Blalock action.

Hannah Pearce had 54 kills with a .489 hitting percentage, 9 blocks, 15 digs and 11 aces, Julia Joyce, had 71 digs (4.6 per set) and 100 percent serving, Clarissa Dupree had 38 kills with a .337 hitting percentage and 2 blocks and Charli Pearce had 21 kills with a .525 hitting percentage and 8 blocks.

Auburn (24-13) was 4-5 last week with a regular season win over Prattville and losses Prattville Christian and Montgomery Catholic and beating Daphne, John Carroll and Hazel Green while losing to Hoover, Mountain Brook and McGill Toolen at the Blalock.

Ellie Pate had 85 kills and Laila Esters had 58 kills.

Daphne (26-25) was 5-5 with a win over Westminster Christan and loss to Bayside in regular season play and beating Elberta and Fairhope to win the Baldwin County Tournament title. Daphne beat John Carroll, host Homewood lost to Auburn, Mountain Brook, Hoover and Trinity in the Blalock.

Ella Lomax had 59 kills, 70 digs, 5 aces and 3 blocks, Madison Hammond had 74 digs and 3 aces and Lucy McCoy had 155 assists, 51 digs, 14 kills, 5 blocks and 5 aces.

CLASS 6A

Third-ranked Bayside was 2-1 with wins over Spanish Fort and Daphne and a loss to Westminster Christian.

Blakeley Robbins had 3 aces, 7 kills, 83 assists, 3 blocks and 18 digs, Maysie Douglas had 27 kills and 5 digs, Misty Kate Smith had 3 aces, 15 kills, 4 blocks and 8 digs, MK Whitehurst had 34 digs and 3 aces and Haley Robinson had 30 kills and 5 blocks.

Fifth-ranked Pelham (33-15) was 6-3 with regular season wins over Tuscaloosa County, American Christian, Gulf Shores and Saraland then beating Saraland and Alabama Christian and losing to Montgomery Academy, Enterprise and Mobile Christian in Shrimp Fest action.

Londyn Wynn had 53 kills, 46 digs, 4 blocks and 8 aces and Camryn McMinn had 75 kills, 57 digs and 6 aces.

Sixth-ranked Hazel Green (33-20) was 4-2 with regular season wins over Athens and Huntsville and beating Spain Park and St Paul’s and losing to Auburn and host Homewood at the Blalock.

St. James (22-14) was 3-1 with wins over Sidney Lanier, Park Crossing and LAMP and a loss to Montgomery Catholic.

Top-ranked Westminster Christian (37-9) was 7-2 with a regular season win over Bayside and loss to Daphne and beating Baker, Baldwin County, Lawrence County, West Morgan, St. Luke’s and Arab to reach the Shrimp Fest Gold Bracket championship before falling to Bob Jones.

Calli Tanielu had 91 kills and 54 digs, Meg Paparella had 89 kills, 16 aces and 49 digs, Rylee Sexton had 56 digs and Paislee Shelton had 224 assists.

Second-ranked Montgomery Academy (38-6) was 7-2 with a regular season win over Arab and loss to Orange Beach and beating Alabama Christian, Pelham, Saraland, host Gulf Shores, West Morgan, Thompson to win the Silver Bracket. The Eagles also lost to Arab,

Second-ranked Montgomery Catholic (23-10) won four matches, sweeping Sidney Lanier, St. James, Auburn and Prattville Christian.

Harper Howell had 24 kills and 6 blocks, Maria Schwarz had 66 assists, 20 digs, 3 blocks, 5 kills and 4 aces and Lennon McAnnally had 25 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, 30 digs, 2 blocks, 5 aces and 43 serves passed.

Fourth-ranked New Hope (28-13) lost to Cullman and Danville as Eevy Bellar had 23 kills (surpassing 1,000 in her career kill and 500 this season) and 3 blocks, Lauren Busbey had 13 kills and 3 blocks and Allie Mathis had 22 assists and 11 digs.

Fifth-ranked UMS-Wright (30-11) was 2-1 with wins over Fairhope and Thomasville and a loss to St. Luke’s.

Eighth-ranked Deshler (38-5) won the Decatur tournament without dropping a set, sweeping West Point twice, Decatur and Covenant Christian twice as Choe Siegel had 25 digs, 8 aces, 60 assists, 38 kills and 2 blocks.

Central-Florence (37-17) was 6-2 with regular season wins over Brooks, Lexington and West Limestone and a loss to Addison and beating Munford, Brewer and Hayden and losing to Susan Moore in the Supreme Courts Invitational.

Chloe May had 194 assists, 7 aces and 47 digs, Callie Beth Wright had 68 kills, 8 aces and 46 digs and Kinsley DiStefano had 58 kills and 5 aces.

DAR (26-20) was 2-4 with wins over Sumiton Christian and Baldwin County and losses to St Michael, Northridge, Bob Jones and Bayshore Christian.

Ruby Tielking had 21 kills and 5 blocks and Chloe Walker had 45 assists, 17 kills and 34 digs.

CLASS 3A

Top-ranked St. Luke’s (34-12) was 8-1 with regular season wins over East Central (Miss.), Mary Montgomery, UMS-Wright and Thomasville and beating Thompson, James Clemens, Albertville and Jasper and losing to Westminster Christian in Shrimp Fest action.

Haley Patterson had 61 digs, 119 kills, 4 aces and 7 blocks, Lexi Garside had 44 digs and 214 assists, Cammie Waite had 10 aces and 87 digs and Gracie Wallace had 60 digs and 4 aces.

Second-ranked Plainview (57-10) won seven matches, beating Grissom, Southside-Gadsden and Ider in regular season play and downing Valley Head, Fyffe and Geraldine twice to win the DeKalb County Tournament.

Saydi Jackson had 33 kills, 3 blocks and 11 digs, Jocelyn Hatfield had 27 kills and 24 digs, Kami Sanders had 23 kills, 4 aces and 7 digs, Ali Price had 137 assists, 20 digs and 2 aces and Abby McGee had 46 digs and 7 assists.

Ella Manning had 36 kills and 6 blocks, Amarreion Lawson had 46 kills and 9 blocks and Melaina Haines had 45 kills, 5 blocks, 36 digs and 55 assists.

Fifth-ranked Susan Moore (43-8) was 8-1 with wins over Appalachian and Hayden twice to capture the Blount County Tournament title and beating St. John Paul II, Belgreen, Westminster-Oak Mountain, Priceville and Central Florence and losing to Danville in the championship match of the Supreme Courts Invitational.

Kaitlyn Hill had 180 assists and 38 digs, Cali Smallwood had 92 kills, 21 digs and 16 blocks and Lacey Floyd had 86 kills, 22 digs, 12 aces and 10 blocks.

Hill has over 2,000 career assists while Floyd has over 1,500 career kills and Smallwood has over 1,250 career kills.

The senior class has a career record of 138-34.

Seventh-ranked Prattville Christian (28-18) was 2-1 with wins over Dadeville and Auburn and a loss to Montgomery Catholic.

Baylee Rogers had 68 assists (surpassing 1,000 career assists), 8 aces and 17 digs, Hannah Jones had 23 kills, 3 aces and 16 digs and Emma Cate Carter had 17 kills, 4 aces and 6 digs.

Seventh-ranked Winston County (24-16) was 2-1 with a regular season win over Lamar County and beating Meek and losing to Addison in the Winston County Tournament championship.

Lynleigh Cobb had 40 digs, 44 kills and 9 blocks, Bella Wakefield had 27 kills and 12 blocks and Madison Comeens had 81 assists and 30 digs.
