HS volleyball update: McGill-Toolen captures Battle of Old Shell Road title

McGill-Toolen compiled a 7-1 record last week, including winning six straight matches to capture the championship of the Battle of Old Shell Road Tournament at St. Paul’s and UMS-Wright.

Class 7A third-ranked McGill-Toolen (30-8) started the week with a regular season 3-2 loss on Tuesday to St. Paul’s on the road then downed St. Michael 3-0 on Thursday.

The Dirty Dozen swept through the tournament without dropping a set in the best-of-three format, beating Saint James, Theodore, Jasper, UMS-Wright, Mobile Christian and downing host St. Paul’s for the title.

Paris McQuirter led the offense with 97 kills with a .394 attack percentage, adding a 2.1 passer rating and 8 blocks. Emma Moore had 57 kills, 8 aces, 17 digs and 30 blocks.

Juliet Galla contributed 16 aces and 116 digs with a 2.2 passer rating.

CLASS 7A

Top-ranked Bob Jones (40-1) swept four best-of-three matches against Sparkman, Hoover, Boaz and Guntersville.

Kennedy Vaughn had 25 kills, Rachel Mecklenburg had 25 kills, 36 assists and 11 digs, Eliza Tyrrell had 21 kills, Meg Jarrett had 46 digs, 10 assists and 5 aces and Riley Lovell had 51 assists, 18 digs and 5 aces.

Second-ranked Enterprise (32-5) won three matches, beating Prattville, Providence Christian and Trinity.

Alivia Freeman had 30 kills and 8 blocks, Jadyn Britton had 29 kills, 24 digs and 2 blocks and Heather Holtz had 80 assists, 19 digs and 3 blocks.

Fourth-ranked Thompson (26-6) was 2-1 with wins over Sparkman and Jasper and a loss to Oak Mountain.

Olivia Kelly had 92 assists, surpassing 1,500 career assists, adding 10 aces and 27 digs, Ella Southern had 24 kills with a .235 attack percentage, a 2.05 passer rating and had 5 blocks, Hannah Drexel had 19 kills with a .405 attack percentage and 6 blocks.

Fifth-ranked Huntsville (29-6) won four matches, beating Hazel Green, Winston County, Muscle Shoals and Central Florence.

Isabelle Alejo had 24 digs, 4 aces and 67 assists, Elizabeth Thomas had 62 digs, 5 aces and 6 assists and Keara Bowen had 62 kills and 10 blocks.

Sixth-ranked Oak Mountain (20-11) beat Thompson and lost to Auburn.

Lauren Schuessler had 2 aces, a 2.67 passer rating, 33 kills with a  .279 attack percentage, 6 blocks, 39 assists and 48 digs and Mabrey Whitehead had 2 aces, a 2.02 passer rating, 34 kills with a .200 attack percentage, 3 blocks and 30 digs.

Seventh-ranked St. Paul’s (35-10) was 7-1 last week with regular season wins over McGill-Toolen and Alma Bryant and Battle of Old Shell Road tournament wins against St. Luke’s, Foley, West Jessamine (Ky.), Fairhope and Spanish Fort (2-1) before losing to McGill-Toolen in the championship.

Janie Ford had 33 kills with .400 attack percentage, 8 aces and 15 blocks, Clarissa Dupree had 65 kills with .271 attack percentage 12 aces, 65 digs, and a 1.96 passer rating and Blake Ferguson had 88 digs, surpassing 500 career digs, 21 aces and a 1.85 passer rating.

The victory over Fairhope was career win No. 300 for coach Lisa Marston, who currently has 301 wins.

Ninth-ranked Spain Park (17-16) was 3-3 with regular season losses to Mountain Brook and Chelsea and tournament wins over Georgia teams Whitewater, St. Pius X and Elite Scholar Academy along with a loss to Mount Paran Christian of Kennesaw, Ga.

Megan Ingersoll had 71 kills, 35 digs and 6 aces, Reagan Gilbert had 42 kills, 27 digs and 8 aces, Cailyn Kyes had 102 assists, 26 digs and 7 aces, Bea Wiggins had 21 kills, Mae Elliott had 11 aces, Grace Devlin had 31 digs and Alexa Benda had 17 kills and 13 blocks.

No. 10 Vestavia Hills (22-10) beat Hewitt-Trussville and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

Millie Burgess had 24 kills and Jordan Madsen had 20 kills while Emily Byrket had 35 assists and 5 aces and Audrey Vielguth had 31 digs.

Auburn (16-17) was 6-4 with regular season wins against Trinity, Prattville Christian and Oak Mountain and losses to Montgomery Academy and Montgomery Catholic. The Tigers beat Prattville, Northridge and Elmore County and lost to Daphne and Saraland in its First Serve Tournament.

Mackenzie Farr had 51 kills, Kambell Fetner had 50 kills and Adalyn Lassiter had 80 digs.

Chelsea (18-14) was 5-1 with wins over Spain Park, Sylvania, Sardis, Springville and Tuscaloosa County and a loss to Briarwood.

Lauren Buchanan had 90 kills, surpassing 1,000 career kills, adding 11 aces, 2 blocks and 36 digs, Cara Belcher had 23 kills, 102 assists, 34 digs, 4 blocks and 15 aces and Kaleigh Hall had 40 kills, 9 blocks, 6 assists and 5 digs.

Daphne (20-20) was 4-3 with regular season losses to St. Luke’s and Jasper and win against Brewbaker Tech, Northridge, Auburn and Wetumpka and a loss to Saraland in Auburn’s First Serve Tournament.

Grace Thigpen had 108 assists, 29 digs, 12 aces, 3 blocks and 2 kills, Charlotte Mekkers had 40 kills, 22 digs, 9 aces and 7 blocks and Ella Lomax had 63 kills. 44 digs, 8 aces and 3 blocks.

Fairhope (33-12) was 2-3 with wins over Southside-Gadsden and Mary G. Montgomery and losses to UMS Wright, Mobile Christian and St. Paul’s.

Peyton Frazer had 17 kills and 8 blocks, Bailey Wiggins had 17 kills and 2 blocks and Gabi Berlage had 16 kills and 9.5 blocks.

CLASS 6A

Second-ranked Spanish Fort (45-7) was 6-1 with regular season wins over Buckhorn and Bayside Academy and beating Faith Academy, Bayshore Christian, UMS-Wright and Jasper in the Battle of Old Shell Road before losing to host St. Paul’s in semifinal play.

Reece Varden had 97 kills with a .480 attack percentage for the week, adding 10 blocks and 16 digs, Alexis Belarmino had 187 assists, surpassing 1,000 career assists, adding 47 digs, 14 kills and 9 blocks, Delaney Clough had 92 digs, 8 aces, 7 assists and a 2.3 passer rating and Mary Madison Lyles had 66 digs, 19 kills, 5 aces, 3 blocks and a 2.4 passer rating.

Sixth-ranked Pelham (18-10) beat Helena and lost to John Carroll.

Londyn Wynn had 30 kills, 17 digs and 3 aces, Kylee Hester had 70 assists, 32 digs and 5 aces and Caley Peterson had 10 kills and 7 blocks.

Eighth-ranked Pike Road (29-5) beat Saint James and Russell County.

Marley Gorman had 14 aces, 11 kills and 5 digs, Jada Gresham had 13 kills and 5 blocks, Rylie Fureigh had 32 assists and 6 digs and Brely Dees had 19 digs and 5 assists.

Allie Lovrich and Taylor Robinson reached 1000 kills. Rylie Fureigh reached 1250 assists.

Ninth-ranked Buckhorn (31-16) was 2-2 with wins over Foley and Escambia County and losses to Spanish Fort and Orange Beach.

McKenna Phillips had 32 kills and Addison Layne had 71 assists, 18 digs, 4 aces and 6 kills.

Muscle Shoals (27-11) was 4-3 with wins over Florence twice, Austin and Winston County and losses to Hazel Green, Madison Academy and Huntsville.

Addison Armstrong had 37 kills, 41 digs and 7 aces, Audrey Johnson had 29 kills and Makenzie Sears had 43 digs and 7 aces.

No. 10 Fort Payne (32-15) won eight matches last week, including earning the title of its tournament. The Wildcats beat Gadsden City, Sardis and Scottsboro in regular season play then downed Moody, Munford, Briarwood twice and Springville to capture the Gold Bracket title.

Cooper Garrett passed the 1,500 kill mark and 1,200 assists for her career while Coach Justin Kisor passed the 200 wins mark for his career.

CLASS 5A

Top-ranked Montgomery Academy (36-5) won four matches, beating Auburn, Trinity, Alabama Christian an Saint James.

Addi Vinson had 103 assists and 32 digs, Elle McBride had 36 kills and 24 digs and Caroline McDaniel had 28 kills and 20 digs.

Second-ranked Arab (37-8) was 2-1 with wins over Ider and Guntersville and a loss to Plainview.

Sami Kate Hudson had 20 kills and 17 digs, Laney Kelley had 19 kills and 13 digs, Millie Lackey had 60 assists and 6 digs and Lexi Mann had 2 aces, 12 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs.

Fifth-ranked Lawrence County (36-14) was 6-1 with regular season wins over Brewer and West Morgan and tournament wins over DAR, West limestone, Madison Academy and Deshler and a loss to DAR.

Kylie Graham had 121 assists, 36 kills and 41 digs, Ava Boyll had 123 kills and 68 digs and Bentlee Cross had 59 kills and 66 digs.

Eighth-ranked Madison Academy (30-17) was 4-3 with a win over Muscle Shoals and loss to Austin in regular season play then beating West Limestone twice and Lindsay Lane and losing to Lawrence County and DAR in tournament action.

Isabelle Sutton had 56 kills with a .207 attack percentage, 56 digs, 4 blocks and 7 aces, Kayla Arnold had 49 kills with a .254 attack percentage, 60 digs and 4 aces and Jacey Crawford had 19 kills with a .217 attack percentage and 7 blocks.

Saint James (25-9) was 4-4 with regular season losses to Pike Road and Montgomery Academy and wins against Theodore, Faith Academy, Southside-Gadsden and St. Luke’s and losses to McGill-Toolen and Jasper in the Battle of Old Shell Road tournament. The Trojans won the Silver Bracket.

Ava Card had 89 kills, surpassing 1,000 career kills, adding 3 blocks, 5 assists, 95 digs and 5 aces, Tatiana Shuford had 2 aces, 5 kills, 6 blocks, 162 assists and 62 digs and Kaylin Corley had 7 aces, 86 kills, 3 blocks, 17 assists and 95 digs.

CLASS 4A

Second-ranked Trinity (17-12) beat Carver-Montgomery and lost to Auburn and Enterprise.

Anna Moore had 11 kills on 26 attempts against Enterprise, Holland Williams had 14 kills on 31 attempts. Isabel Hill passed a 2.5 in serve receive on 34 attempts and had 14 digs and 5 assists.

Fourth-ranked DAR (32-15) was 7-1 last week with regular season wins over North Jackson, Scottsboro and Douglas and losing to Lawrence County in pool play at the Janet Latham Invitational tournament in Athens. The Patriots beat Madison Academy, West Limestone, Athens and Lawrence County for the title.

Emily Reeves had 91 kills and 121 digs and Ruby Tielking had 58 kills and 11 blocks.

Sixth-ranked Central-Florence (42-7) won 10 matches last week, sweeping Brooks, Ardmore, Rogers, Russellville and Colbert County in regular season play then beating Waterloo, Wilson and Mars Hill Bible in Lauderdale County Tournament pool play and downing Rogers and Lexington in the semifinal round. The Wildcats paly Brooks for the tournament title on Monday.

Callie Beth Wright had 97 kills, picking up career kill No. 1,000 on Tuesday against Rogers, adding 11 aces for the week. Chloe May had 236 assists, 54 digs and 23 aces and Kinsley DiStefano had 67 kills and 19 aces.

The win over Lexington set a new school record for wins with 42, the previous high of 41 coming in 2019.

Brooks (21-19) was 4-2 with wins over Ardmore, Rogers, Wilson and Lauderdale County and losses to Lexington and Lauderdale County, advancing to the championship match of the Lauderdale County Tournament against Central-Florence on Monday.

Scarlett Albert had 43 kills, 4 blocks and 10 digs, Maggie Jae Marsh had 36 kills, 3 blocks, 27 digs, 13 aces and 57 assists and Brayleigh Leone had 59 digs and 8 aces.

Priceville was 4-1 with a regular season loss to Cullman and four straight wins to capture its tournament on Saturday. The Bulldogs beat East Limestone, Brewer, Grissom and Clements for the championship.

Maddi Kennedy had 50 digs, Ashlyn Johnson had 115 assists, 42 digs and 4 aces, Abby Langlois had 43 kills, 22 digs and 17 blocks and Emmy Sherwood had 46 kills and 13 digs.

West Morgan (20-18) was 1-2 with a win over Addison and losses to Danville and Lawrence County.

Haniyah Standridge had 28 kills, Kylei Russell had 58 assists and Zoey Brewington had 74 digs.

CLASS 3A

Second-ranked Mobile Christian (31-4) was 7-1 with regulars season wins over Cottage Hill Christian, James Clemons and Baker and Battle of Old Shell Road tournament wins against Mary G. Montgomery, Southside-Gadsden, Fairhope and West Jessamine (Ky.) and a tournament loss to McGill-Toolen.

Ella Manning had 14 aces, 32 kills and 12 blocks, Melaina Haines had 11 aces, 94 kills, 73 assists and 64 digs, Hadley Kelly had 42 kills and 16 blocks and Melissa Patel had 6 aces and 79 digs.

Third-ranked Lauderdale County (45-11) was 7-1 with regular season wins over Athens, Lindsey Lane and Lexington and beating Lexington, Rogers, Brooks and Waterloo before losing to Brooks in the Lauderdale County Tournament.

Molly Burchell had 76 kills, surpassing 1,000 career kills in the Saturday match against Rogers, adding 10 aces, 30 digs and 8 blocks while Laura Clemmons had 44 kills and Emma Reding had 194 assists, 10 aces and 14 digs.

Sixth-ranked Prattville Christian (23-14) lost matches to Auburn, Montgomery Catholic and Brewbaker Tech.

Sophomore Baylee Rogers had 52 assists for the week, surpassing 2,000 career assists in the match against Brewbaker Tech. She’s the first player in school history to break 2,000 in any category. She added 6 kills, and 25 digs last week.

Emma Cate Carter had 3 aces, 30 kills, 2 blocks and 23 digs and Natalee Wheeler had 3 aces, 32 digs and 6 assists.

No. 10 Geraldine (21-11) beat Collinsville, Asbury and Susan Moore.

Kentlei Rogers had 6 aces, 13 kills and 5 digs, Brooklyn Hall had 8 aces, 33 kills, 4 blocks and 2 digs and Hallie Burns had 12 aces, 2 assists and 12 digs.

CLASS 2A

Sixth-ranked Sand Rock (35-15) was 7-1 with wins over Boaz, Sardis, Ider, Glencoe twice, Hokes Bluff, Cedar Bluff, and Cleburne County and a loss to Sylacauga.

Katelyn St.Clair had 52 digs, 9 aces and 109 kills, breaking the single-season school record of 611 kills set by Madison Smith in 2013. St.Clair has 616 kills this season and surpassed Smtih in the match against Sylacauga. Rylin St.Clair had 168 assists for the week, 41 digs and 5 blocks, Chloe Stephens had 107 digs and Bethany Davis had 51 kills, 72 digs, 6 aces and 4 blocks.

Westminster-Oak Mountain beat Holy Spirit and lost to Oxford and Donoho.

Georgia Valentine had 27 kills, 5 digs and 12 aces and Olivia Montgomery had 12 kills, 6 digs and 4 aces.

CLASS 1A

Top-ranked Addison (32-8) was 2-1 with wins over Danville and Haleyville and a loss to West Morgan.

No. 10 Winston County (13-20) was 2-3 with wins over Lynn and Florence and losses to lost to Lamar County, Huntsville and Muscle Shoals.

Lynleigh Cobb had 50 kills, 20 digs and 6 aces, Alexa Edgil had 34 kills, 9 digs and 4 aces and Marli Stewart had 97 assists, 10 digs and 2 aces.

Top-ranked Edgewood Academy (29-1) beat Lee Scott Academy and lost to Hooper Academy.

Lindsey Brown had 21 kills, 11 aces, 33 assists and 11 digs, Madison Martin had 15 kills, 5 blocks, 6 digs and 2 aces and Avery White had 18 kills, 8 digs and 28 assists.

Third-ranked Glenwood (17-5) beat Lee-Scott and Chambers.
