“Our pitchers were good,” Madison Academy coach David Pressley said. “And we came out and hit a lot of balls hard and put pressure on the defense.”
“Madison Academy is a good ballclub,” Pleasant Grove coach Craig Lehman said. “Congratulations to coach Pressley and his staff. We ran into a good baseball team. I thought our guys did compete a little better in the second game. We’re an extremely young program with eighth- and ninth-graders on the field. And I look forward to what the future can hold.”
Davis Parker hit a leadoff inside-the-park home run in the third inning of game two. After a walk, Jud Collins belted a two-run homer for an 8-0 lead. Pleasant Grove’s Timothy Blue took the loss.
Parker went 2-for-3 with his homer, a two-run double, two runs scored and four runs batted in.
“I just had a really simple approach trying to hit the ball up the middle and it worked out,” Parker, a sophomore center fielder, said. “I was able to put some good barrels on some good pitches.”
Jack Doyle (5-2) allowed no hits with six strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
“I felt like I enjoyed it really well,” the sophomore right-hander said. “I felt our defense played really well behind me, defending the ball. And I just felt like we came into these two games having a chip on our shoulder and having an urge to just win.”
Left-hander Joshua Bybee also pitched a gem as Madison Academy won the first game 28-0. He had six strikeouts and allowed two hits and two walks in four innings. He picked off two baserunners. Maddox Meadows went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer, three runs scored and four runs batted in. Kaleb Freeman took the loss for the Spartans.
Bybee (4-5), a senior, is a Harding signee. Asked about his two pickoffs, he said, “We work on that a lot.”
“It was great for the team to get out there and compete and do it as a family,” Bybee said of his stellar outing. “It was good to get the young guys in there and take care of business.”
