How to watch Katie Britt, Dale Strong get sworn in to Congress live at inauguration

Alabamians can watch their newest two federal representatives take oaths of office Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Sen.-elect Katie Britt, a Republican from Enterprise and the first woman to be elected to represent Alabama in the Senate, will be sworn in during the first meeting of the 118th U.S. Congress.

A live version of the ceremony will be streamed on the Senate’s website.

To watch Britt take office, viewers can click on the “Floor Webcast” session of the Senate website. Senators will meet for a pro forma session at 11:30 a.m. EST, then the first session will convene at noon EST or 11:00 a.m. CST.

Britt’s swearing in session will be streamed live on the Senate website at 11:00 a.m. CST.

To watch members of the House of Representatives take office, viewers can watch a live stream beginning at 9:00 a.m. CST from the office of the clerk.

Alabama’s other new congressperson is Rep.-elect Dale Strong. He will take Mo Brooks’ seat in north Alabama. Strong has been chair of the Madison County Commission since 2012 and has overseen the Huntsville area’s rapid rise in growth and jobs.

Strong has said he is interested in serving on the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees in Congress.

Britt will be taking the seat of Sen. Richard Shelby, her former boss and mentor. Shelby has served on Appropriations and Environment and Public Works committees, among others.

Most recently, Britt has been tapped to serve on the Republican Party Advisory Council with the goal of assisting Chairwoman of the RNC Ronna McDaniel in charting a path to victory during the upcoming 2024 presidential election, though what candidate the group will support is still unlcear.

In November, Britt wrote in a statement to AL.com that she plans to “hit the ground running” on Tuesday.

“Our state has several pressing challenges and opportunities facing us, and we need to tackle them head-on,” Britt wrote. “From expanding high-speed broadband internet and quality, affordable mental health care access to combating the opioid epidemic, bolstering rural health care services, and ensuring every child in Alabama is able to receive a high-quality education regardless of their zip code, I want to be a partner at the federal level to finding and implementing real solutions that our children and our children’s children will benefit from long into the future.”

Britt has also said she plans to prioritize the desires of Alabama parents during her time in the Senate.
