How to see your incoming mail
Mail theft is a growing problem, prompting the U.S. Postal Service to deploy some 12,000 new high-security mailboxes at post offices. But what can you do to protect deliveries to your mailbox? Those are high-risk targets as well, the USPS statistics showing there could be as many as 1.7 million cases of mail theft daily.
One solution, according to USPS, is what’s known as Informed Delivery.
Informed Delivery is a free service that allows you to see previews of your incoming mail as well as status updates on incoming and outgoing packages. Users receive an email each morning that shows the front side, including your address, of the day’s mail. The same information can be accessed anytime via a dashboard on your phone, computer or through the USPS mobile app.
The photo allows you to see what’s coming in so you can make sure it arrives, something particularly important for financial documents, credit card statements or other mail containing personal information.
To be eligible, you must have a residential address or business address or PO Box in an eligible ZIP code. One catch – you must have what USPS calls a “uniquely coded” mailbox, meaning some apartment buildings or condos may not be eligible.
