How to enter ‘Hamilton’ lottery for $10 tickets in Alabama

Theatergoers in Alabama who are counting their pennies should know there’s a cheap (and fairly easy) way to see “Hamilton” during its run in Birmingham. A limited number of $10 tickets for each performance of the Tony-winning musical will be available through a digital lottery that starts on Friday, Jan. 13.

A national touring production of “Hamilton” is scheduled for 16 performances here, Jan. 24-Feb. 4 at the BJCC Concert Hall, 2100 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. North. The show’s run is part of the Broadway in Birmingham series presented by the American Theatre Guild.

Although a specific number of lottery tickets wasn’t mentioned in the latest press release from the Theatre Guild, the organization said in November that 40 seats for each performance would be available via the lottery.

It’s a digital lottery that requires the use of an official app for “Hamilton,” and here’s how it works.

The first lottery will open at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, Jan., 13, and close at 12 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 19, for tickets to performances during the first eight shows, Tuesday, Jan. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 29.

The second lottery will open on 10 a.m. CT on Friday, Jan. 20, and close at 12 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 26, for performances during the second eight shows, Monday, Jan. 30, through Saturday, Feb. 4.

To enter the lottery, download the “Hamilton” app. It’s available via Apple’s App store and Google Play. Follow directions on the app, which requires you to create an account with an email address and password.

You’ll see an icon for the lottery near the top left-hand corner of the screen. Information on cities offering the “Hamilton” lottery will be shown in that section of the app. (When we looked on Thursday, Birmingham was not listed among the cities for the lottery, but that should change on Friday once the local lottery begins.)

Notifications for the lottery — telling users if they are winners or not — will be sent each Thursday, 1-4 p.m., for performances scheduled during the coming week. Notifications will come via email and mobile push notification, the Theatre Guild says. Winners have two hours to claim and pay for their tickets. No purchase or payment is required to participate, and each winner may buy one or two tickets priced at $10 each.

One entry per person is allowed in the lottery. “Repeat entries and disposable email addresses will be discarded,” the Theatre Guild says. You must be 18 years old to enter the lottery.

Lottery winners can pick up their tickets at the BJCC Concert Hall’s will call area, starting two hours before each performance. You must have a “valid, non-expired photo ID that matches the name used to enter,” the Theatre Guild says. Lottery tickets are void if resold, and cannot be transferred to another person.

Don’t want to enter the lottery? Single tickets for performances of “Hamilton” are on sale via Ticketmaster, priced at $49-$229 for standard tickets.

When we checked Ticketmaster on Thursday, some performances were listed as sold out. Some weekend performances had scattered single seats available. Multiple seats were available at standard prices via Ticketmaster for six performances on Monday, Jan. 30, through Friday, Feb. 3.

“Hamilton,” a groundbreaking musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, won Tony and Grammy awards, as well as a Pulitzer Prize. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2015 and continues to run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York. A movie version of “Hamilton” is streaming on Disney+.

Performances of “Hamilton” in Birmingham have been hotly anticipated since April 2020, when the musical first was announced for 2021-2022 season of the Broadway in Birmingham series. COVID took its toll on Broadway in Birmingham, as it did on much of theater world, and “Hamilton” was postponed to the 2022-2023 season

“Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, ‘Hamilton’ has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre — a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education,” the show’s website says.

Creator Miranda, who played the main character on Broadway, isn’t performing in the national tour, and audiences in Birmingham won’t see actors from the original cast.

Three different casts perform on national tours of “Hamilton”; each is named for a character in the show. Birmingham will see the Angelica cast, which features Edred Utomi as Alexander Hamilton, Josh Tower as Aaron Burr, Stephanie Umoh as Angelica Schuyler, Alysha Deslorieux as Eliza Hamilton, David Park as the Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson and Peter Matthew Smith as King George III.

Side note: Did you know that “Hamilton” has at least two connections to Alabama? Huntsville native Michael Luwoye played the title role on Broadway and on a national tour, 2016-2019. Also, Birmingham’s Jordan Fisher took over the dual role of John Laurens/Philip Hamilton on Broadway in 2016-2017.
