How the teams ahead of Alabama in the CFP rankings did this weekend
Alabama football did what it needed to. The Crimson Tide beat No. 1 Georgia 27-24 in Atlanta, capturing an SEC championship.
Now, the Tide has to wait. Even with the win moving it to 12-1 on the season, and even with the conference title, UA isn’t guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Here’s how the teams that were active and ranked ahead of Alabama did this weekend. The playoff field will be announced at 11:15 a.m. Sunday on ESPN.
Michigan 26, Iowa 0
As expected, the Wolverines ran away with the Big Ten championship. As is customary, the Hawkeyes weren’t able to do anything offensively, and Michigan did enough to score on a tough Iowa defense.
The Wolverines are now likely a lock in the CFP field.
Washington 34, Oregon 31
A battle between the No. 3 Huskies and No. 5 Ducks essentially knocked Oregon out of playoff contention. Washington was able to repeat its win from earlier in the season.
UW is now almost certain to appear in the final field when it is announced on Sunday.
Florida State 16, Louisville 6
For most of Saturday’s ACC championship game, it appeared neither team really wanted to win. However, the No. 4 Seminoles, led by a third-string quarterback, came away with the victory to remain undefeated.
Many playoff projections are predicting the final spot could come down the Florida State or Alabama.
Texas 49, Oklahoma State 21
The No. 7 Longhorns were playing their final conference game as a member of the Big 12. Texas was able to leave the conference with a championship, blowing out the Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.
Most projections have the Longhorns moving into the playoff spot vacated by Georgia, after the Bulldogs lost to Alabama.
