How the teams ahead of Alabama in the CFP rankings did Saturday
After starting out ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoff Top 25, Alabama football will need a bit of help to make the top four at the end of the season. The Crimson Tide held up its end of the bargain Saturday, with a 42-28 win over LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Unfortunately for Alabama’s place in the rankings, every team ranked above it also won. Here’s how those teams fared on Saturday.
Ohio State 35, Rutgers 16
Rutgers led for a moment against the top-ranked Buckeyes. That was short-lived, as OSU showed why it earned the top ranking.
The Ohio State defense shined in the red zone, turning four Scarlet Knights possessions into just 16 points in that area.
Georgia 30, Missouri 21
The 12th-ranked Tigers put up a good fight. It still wasn’t enough as No. 2 Georgia showed it remains the class of the SEC East.
The Bulldogs have now won 26 consecutive games.
Michigan 41, Purdue 13
Currently embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal, No. 3 Michigan still might be the best team in college football at the moment. Purdue is in the first season of a new head coach, and isn’t the strongest opponent, but the Wolverines handled business.
Next week could be a bigger threat, as Jim Harbaugh’s team faces Penn State.
Florida State 24, Pittsburgh 7
The so-called “Pitt Superweapon” didn’t fire Saturday. The No. 4 Seminoles didn’t have much trouble dispatching the Panthers.
Florida State plays a rivalry game next week against Miami.
Washington 52, USC 42
Saturday’s matchup between the No. 5 Huskies and USC was always going to be a high-flying affair. Washington was good enough to take down the Trojans.
Michael Penix Jr. remains a legitimate Heisman contender for Washington.
Oregon 63, Cal 19
Cal was entering Saturday’s game after scaring USC the previous week. That wasn’t to be against an extremely solid No. 6 Oregon team.
The Ducks face USC next up.
Texas 33, Kansas State 30
The Longhorns had the toughest time of any team ahead of Alabama this week. Texas got out to a lead, but quickly found itself on the receiving end of a comeback from a feisty K-State squad.
In the end, Steve Sarkisian’s squad did enough to survive in overtime.
