How the teams ahead of Alabama football in CFP rankings did Saturday
Alabama football moved to 9-1 on the season, 7-0 in SEC play on Saturday with a 49-21 win over Kentucky in Lexington. The Crimson Tide sat at No. 8 in the College Football Playoff rankings before the game, having not moved since the CFP top 25 was initially revealed.
The win clinched the SEC West for the Tide and kept UA in the race for the CFP. However, Alabama didn’t get much help in regards to moving up in the rankings this week.
Here’s how the games that could have moved Alabama up went on Saturday.
Ohio State 38, Michigan State 3
The No. 1 Buckeyes took care of business against a Michigan State squad that had been mired in controversy and losing all season. OSU remained undefeated, which will likely remain until its rivalry week matchup with Michigan.
Ohio State will face Minnesota in Columbus Saturday.
Georgia 52, Ole Miss 17
Ole Miss entered Saturday still alive in the SEC west and ranked No. 9, one spot behind Alabama. The Rebels will fall after getting smoked by No. 2 Georgia, which will face Alabama in the SEC championship game.
Georgia heads to Knoxville to play Tennessee Saturday before closing the regular season against Georgia Tech.
Michigan 24, Penn State 15
Even with head coach Jim Harbaugh suspended, the No. 3 Wolverines handled business against a ranked Penn State team. Michigan was aided by the Nittany Lions’ offensive failings, but still managed the victory.
The Wolverines will play Maryland on the road Saturday.
Florida State 27, Miami 20
The No. 4 Seminoles had more trouble then they probably should have with the Hurricanes, but that’s to be expected in a rivalry game. Florida State will likely not fall in the rankings after the win, given Washington’s struggles.
The Seminoles will play North Alabama on Saturday before ending the regular season with Florida.
Washington 35, Utah 28
The No. 5 Huskies were losing much of the way against the Utes. However, Washington managed to pull out the victory and remain undefeated, if unlikely to leapfrog one of the teams in the top four.
UW will travel to Oregon State Saturday for another battle of ranked teams.
Oregon 36, USC 27
The No. 6 Ducks’ place in the rankings was criticized last week, given their lack of ranked victories compared to Texas and Alabama. Saturday, they took care of business against a team that was ranked entering the game, albeit a clearly flawed USC squad.
Oregon will play Arizona State next.
Texas 29, TCU 26
The lone team to beat Alabama played a tough game against a TCU team that played for a national title last season before embarking a disappointing 2023 campaign. However, the No. 7 Longhorns avoided a second loss.
Texas travels to Iowa State on Saturday.
