How safe are Birmingham pedestrians?
The Birmingham-Hoover metro area had over 130 pedestrian fatalities between 2018-2022, according to the 2024 Dangerous by Design report from national community development nonprofit Smart Growth America.
That means 35 more fatalities than the 98 recorded from 2013-2017 (a .67% increase). The increase made Birmingham the 39th most dangerous metro area for pedestrians in Smart Growth’s ranking of 101 large metros across the U.S.
