How Nick Saban’s perfectionism complicated family grocery runs
Nick Saban is a perfectionist, even in retirement.
The former Alabama coach has always been ultra-focused, but the 72-year-old is now doing things time didn’t allow him to do during his 17 years in Tuscaloosa.
Grocery shopping, however, is not one of them.
In an ESPN story which shares Saban’s transition from seven-time national championship-winning coach to retiree, Kristen Saban – Nick’s daughter – shared a funny anecdote about dear, old dad running to the store to grab a few things for the family.
A few years ago, when the family was at their old home in Boca Grande, Florida, Miss Terry and Kristen sent Saban to the store for condiments like ketchup and mustard. Saban quickly became every man sent to the store by his wife.

“He was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, I can do it,’ and he’s not even in the store for five minutes when he calls and says, ‘There’s a hundred bottles of ketchup and mustard on the shelf. Which kind am I supposed to get?’” Kristen told ESPN. “‘Is there a specific brand or size?’”
The laughing Kristen shared she and Miss Terry reacted the same way.
“God forbid he grabs the wrong bottle,” she said. “We were like, ‘OK, just grab whatever.’”
