How much rain could Alabama get in the next few days?

Alabama will get some much-needed rain in the next day or two, which could help with worsening drought conditions in parts of the state.

South Alabama has gotten its share of rain, and will get more on Thursday, but the rest of the state has been fairly dry, with what is typically the driest month of the year (October) on the horizon.

The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor, released each Thursday, shows that northwest and south Alabama are the driest spots in the state and are in Level 2 or severe drought. Nearly all of the rest of the state is in Level 1 or moderate drought.

The good news is that some beneficial rain is expected both today and Friday for some of those drier areas.

A stationary front draped along the Gulf Coast will continue to provide rain and storms for parts of south Alabama.

The National Weather Service expects rain chances to creep northward on Friday, so more of Alabama will have better chances of seeing it.

The rainfall outlook from NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center (at the top of this post) shows that south Alabama will likely get the most rain over the next two days.

Areas near the Gulf Coast could get at least 2 inches, or more, through Friday. Rain will be possible across most of the rest of the state, but in lighter amounts.

The added clouds and rain will keep temperatures very pleasant compared with those of late. Highs on Thursday will be “only” in the 80s for much of the state, except for some areas in north Alabama, which may see the 90s:

Friday will continue higher rain chances and lower temperatures across the state.

No organized severe weather is expected either today or on Friday, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
