How hot will August be for Alabama? Here’s what one weather forecast predicts

August is typically one of the hottest months of the year in Alabama. But will August 2025 be hotter than average?

Forecasters are leaning that way.

A temperature outlook for the month of August from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center suggests most of Alabama will have a 33-40 percent probability of above-average temperatures over the course of this month.

Parts of north and west Alabama are the exception. According to the CPC those areas will have equal chances of above-average or below-average temperatures this month. (See the full U.S. forecast at the top of this post.)

But there could be increased chances for rain to help mitigate that.

The precipitation outlook for August, also by the CPC, shows increased probabilities for above-average rainfall for the entire state over the next month:

All of Alabama has increased odds of above-average rainfall in August, with the probabilities increasing as you head to the southeast in the state.CPC

Northwest Alabama is forecast to have a 33-40 percent probability of above-average rainfall. Parts of north, central and west Alabama will have a 40-50 percent chance.

The highest odds for rain will be for parts of south and east Alabama. Those sports will have a 50-60 percent probability for above-average rainfall.

What is average, though?

Here is a look at average August high and low temperatures and rainfall for a few Alabama cities:

  • Birmingham: Average high 90.6 degrees; average low 71.3 degrees; average rainfall 4.35 inches
  • Cullman: Average high 87.4 degrees; average low 65.8 degrees; average rain 4.13 inches
  • Dauphin Island: Average high 88.1 degrees; average low 78.3 degrees; average rain 6.02 inches
  • Dothan: Average high 92 degrees; average low 72 degrees; average rain 6.17 inches
  • Fort Payne: Average high 90.2 degrees; average low 69.2 degrees; average rain 3.86 inches

  • Mobile: Average high 90.8 degrees; average low 72.9 degrees; average rain 6.87 inches

  • Tuscaloosa: Average high 91.2 degrees; average low 71.7 degrees; average rain 4.36 inches

The first weekend of August will bring some cooler temperatures to much of the state, and highs on Sunday have the potential to stay in the 70s for parts of eastern Alabama.

However, those cooler temperatures won’t last long.

The Climate Prediction Center’s six- to 10-day temperature outlook is forecasting a decent probability of above-average temperatures for Alabama from Aug. 6-10:

6-10 day temp outlook
Much of Alabama has slightly increased odds of higher-than-average temperatures from Aug. 6-10.CPC

The exception is parts of north and east Alabama, which could have near-average temperatures.

The precipitation outlook for the same time period includes 33-40 percent chances for above-average rainfall for the entire state:

6-10 precipitation outlook
All of Alabama has a 33-40 percent probability of above-average temperatures from Aug. 6-10.CPC

One other thing to keep in mind is that the Atlantic hurricane season typically becomes more active in August, which could bring more rain to Alabama.

There’s nothing brewing in the Atlantic, Gulf or Caribbean as of Friday, but look for activity to increase through the end of the month.

The CPC’s tropical outlook shows increased odds of activity near the U.S. from Aug. 6-12 but no activity from Aug. 13-19:

Areas near the U.S. have increased odds for tropical activity from Aug. 6-12.CPC
