How Alabama football’s roster changed in spring transfer portal window

The spring transfer portal window is closed. For Alabama football, the summer can begin.

Compared to certain other times of year, the spring window was fairly quiet for the Crimson Tide. The news might not be completely done rolling in, as players can still be signed, and departures only had to tell UA their intentions to leave by the deadline, with the paperwork sometimes taking longer.

“There’s guys that we’re working through that we will have visits or we’re trying to get them set to come to campus,” Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said on Thursday. “So I think in the end, I feel good about the direction we’re going, with making the roster better, improving the roster. And that’s what it’s about.

As things continue to shift, here’s how Alabama’s roster changed during the spring window.

James Brockermeyer– TCU

Brockermeyer’s departure came as a bit of a surprise. He was competing for the Crimson Tide’s starting center job with Parker Brailsford, and seemed to be in the lead for the gig, given Brailsford’s absence.

Instead, he opted to join his brother, Tommy, another former Crimson Tide lineman, at TCU.

Khurtiss Perry– Undecided

Perry was a four-star recruiting to Alabama from Pike Road in the class of 2022. He didn’t see the field much during his time with the Crimson Tide, redshirting his first season before appearing in one game in 2023.

Peyton Woodyard– Undecided

Woodyard is a true freshman, a member of the Tide’s 2024 recruiting class. The four-star DB from St. John’s Bosco in California early-enrolled at Alabama before its appearance in the Rose Bowl.

He initially stuck around through UA’s coaching transition from Nick Saban, but opted to enter the portal toward the end of the spring window.

Tony Mitchell– Undecided

Another loss at defensive back for the Crimson Tide. Mitchell joined the Tide in the recruiting class of 2023.

He mostly contributed on special teams last season. He finished the year with one tackle.

Kadyn Proctor– OL

An old friend returned to Tuscaloosa to help bolster an offensive line that was a unit of need according to DeBoer. Proctor left the Tide after the 2023 season, a year in which he took over the starting job at left tackle as a true freshman.

Proctor had headed to Iowa, after a recruitment that saw the Hawkeyes self-report a minor NCAA violation. After a brief stint with the team, he changed his mind, heading back to Alabama once the portal reopened.

Graham Nicholson– K

Alabama lost its best kicker of the Nick Saban era when Will Reichard ran out of eligibility after the 2023 season. Following a battle for the job during spring, DeBoer opted to go get a proven commodity.

Nicholson had spent his prior college career kicking for Miami of Ohio. He won last season’s Lou Groza Trophy as the nation’s top kicker, actually beating out Reichard, who was a finalist.

DeBoer said before the spring window that defensive back was a position of need for the Tide. UA could still sign some more players out of the portal, but currently, the result of the 15-day window is a net loss, with Howard, who joins up from Charlotte, the only addition.

Howard had two interceptions last season for the 49ers as a true freshman, playing in . He’ll have three seasons of eligibility with the Crimson Tide.
