How Alabama compares to LSU

It’s officially Alabama-LSU week after both got a Saturday away from competition.

Once one of the nation’s biggest games annually, this rivalry hasn’t brought quite the same pregame hype since the 2019 meeting in Tuscaloosa. After the Tigers ended a long losing streak that day in Bryant-Denny Stadium, Alabama’s been the heavy favorite in 2020 and 2021. A blowout in Baton Rouge came in 2020 before LSU went toe-to-toe as an underdog last year.

The 6 p.m. CT Saturday meeting in Tiger Stadium will feature a much different host team under new coach Brian Kelly. He brought in Arizona State transfer quarterback Jayden Daniels and his dual-threat skillset that was such a factor two weeks ago against Ole Miss. Daniels rushed for 121 yards on 23 attempts while completing 21 of 28 passes for another 248 yards in a 45-20 beating of then-undefeated Ole Miss.

Statistically speaking overall, the Tigers aren’t overwhelming. They rank 42nd in both passing and rushing offense and sit behind Alabama in almost every major statistical measure we survey (seen below) on a weekly basis. Turnover margins and penalty yardage were an LSU advantage while practically every other category had the Crimson Tide on top.

Neither team had an area it challenged the national leaders, either. Alabama was top 10 in scoring offense, scoring defense, third-down defense and 20-yard plays allowed but wasn’t close to a top spot. LSU’s best ranking with 19th on third-down offense.
