Houston Texans coordinator provides update on former Alabama standout
Injuries caused Christian Harris to miss most of the Houston Texans’ 2024 season, and he hasn’t been practicing with the team this offseason.
But Texans defensive coordinator Matt Burke said on Friday the NFL team expects the former Alabama standout will have completed his rehab work in time for the start of training camp in late July.
“He’s here working like he always is,” Burke said. “Again, another guy – I sound like a broken record. Christian’s been doing his thing. Again, all these guys are on a little different plans and routines. The goal is to get all these guys ready for camp, and he’s on track to be there for us.”
In his second NFL season, Harris recorded 101 tackles in 16 regular-season games in 2023. Then in a 45-14 playoff victory over the Cleveland Browns, Harris had eight tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one interception, which he returned 36 yards for his first NFL touchdown.
But in 2024, a calf injury in training camp landed Harris on injured reserve. After he missed the first 13 games of the season, Harris returned to the Houston lineup for three games before an ankle injury caused him to miss the regular-season finale. Harris returned for the Texans’ two postseason contests, but he played only eight defensive snaps.
Injuries to Harris and other linebackers allowed another former Crimson Tide standout, Henry To’oTo’o to step forward for the Texans. His time on the field jumped from 436 defensive snaps as a fifth-round rookie in 2023 to 830 in 2024, and To’oTo’o led Houston with 105 tackles last season.
Former Pro Bowler Azeez Al-Shaair returns as a starter, too, although he missed six games last season.
This offseason, the Texans signed linebacker EJ Speed as a free agent after he made 142 tackles in 15 games during his sixth season with the Indianapolis Colts.
Houston completed the first of three weeks of Phase 3 of its offseason program on Friday. After their practice on June 11, the Rams will break until the start of training camp.
