Hot, but how hot? Here’s the August outlook for Alabama

Continued hot temperatures are in the forecast for all of Alabama this week, according to forecasters.

Highs on Tuesday are forecast to reach the mid- to upper 90s across a large part of the state, and Mobile could hit 100 degrees or higher (today’s temperature forecast is at the top of this post).

Thanks to Tropical Storm Debby, drier air is filtering in over parts of north and central Alabama, but south Alabama remains very humid, and heat advisories are in effect for several counties in the southwest today:

Of course, furnace-like heat is expected in Alabama in August. But will it be hotter than average this month?

If you like the heat, then you may be in luck. The August temperature outlook from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says there’s a higher probability of above-average temperatures in Alabama over the month of August:

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting a 50 to 60 percent chance that Alabama will have hotter-than-average temperatures over the month. The probabilities are even higher for southeast Alabama.CPC

The map above is forecasting a 50 to 60 percent probability of above-average temperatures for most of Alabama this month. The probabilities are slightly higher (60 to 70 percent) for the southeast Alabama and slightly lower (40 to 50 percent) for the northwest corner of the state.

What is average, anyway? Here are the average high temperatures from National Weather Service data for a few Alabama cities over the month of August:

* Birmingham: 90.6 degrees

* Dothan: 92 degrees

* Huntsville: 91.3 degrees

* Mobile: 90.8 degrees

* Montgomery: 93.6 degrees

* Muscle Shoals: 91.2 degrees

* Troy: 89.9 degrees

* Tuscaloosa: 91.2 degrees

A shorter-range outlook, the six- to 10-day forecast, also shows higher chances for hotter temperatures for part of — but not all of — the state:

North and parts of eastern Alabama have equal chances of above- or below-average temperatures through mid-August, while southwest Alabama is expected to still have higher chances of above-average readings.

Rain chances will also be low through the next six to 10 days, especially for parts of north and central Alabama. Here is the CPC outlook for rainfall:
