Hoover teacher taken off âapproved substituteâ list after child porn arrest
The Hoover City Schools Board of Education said Thursday it has removed a teacher from its “approved substitute” list after he was arrested on child pornography charges.
Russell John Sweeney, 48, of Hoover, was arrested last week by special agents with the Alabama Attorney General’s Office on two counts of possession of child pornography, Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Wednesday.
Sweeney, who has been a substitute with Hoover City Schools “for just over a year,” has been “removed from our list of approved substitutes pending the outcome of his legal issues,” the district said in a statement sent to AL.com Thursday.
“He cleared all state-mandated background checks. His service as a substitute teacher has been without incident or observed misconduct. We have no reason to believe that any of the allegations in question involve or affect any Hoover student,” the statement went on to say.
“Parents may nevertheless be assured that we have taken every step that we can take as a school system to ensure the welfare of our students,” the statement continued.
The district said it was cooperating with authorities.
