A release today from Hoover City Schools announced that football coach Drew Gilmer and defensive coordinator Adam Helms have both been placed on administrative leave.

According to the release, the decision to place the coaches on leave was “made to ensure a thorough and impartial review of recent developments.”

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are top priorities,” Superintendent Dr. Kevin Maddox said in the release. “We are taking this matter seriously and working diligently to resolve it promptly and fairly.”

The release also stated that “Parents, students and staff will be informed of any significant developments as the investigation progresses.”

Gilmer, who was hired from Clay-Chalkville in January to replace Wade Waldrop, couldn’t comment on the situation. The Bucs are scheduled to open the season in a national showcase Aug. 24 against Western, Fla.

He spent the last eight years at Clay, winning two of the last three 6A titles. He had an 81-12 record with the Cougars. His 2023 team went 14-0 and defeated Saraland in the championship game.

Neither Hoover athletic director Harley Lamey nor Hoover City Schools interim public information officer Bryan Phillips immediately responded to questions about who is leading the Bucs program at the moment and what might be next for Gilmer and Helms. They both forwarded announcement from Hoover to AL.com.
