Hoover bank robbery suspect who took his own life during standoff identified

A man who Hoover police say took his own life as officers investigating a bank robbery closed in on him has been identified.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office says Terry Don Givens II, 40, of Hoover, was the man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at an apartment in the 3300 block of Chase Lake Fairway in Hoover Friday evening.

Givens shot himself at 7:28 pm and was pronounced dead at the scene about 30 minutes later, the coroner’s office said. The shooting came after a standoff of several hours duration with police.

Givens was suspected in a holdup last Tuesday just before 11 a.m. at Wells Fargo on John Hawkins Parkway.

Witnesses told Hoover police that a tall, thin man, entered the bank, indicated he was armed, and demanded money from the teller. Witnesses said he wore a hoodie, mask and sunglasses, and left with an undetermined amount of money.

Police were unable to find the robber that day.

On Friday, about 2 p.m., Hoover detectives tried to serve a search warrant at Givens’ apartment, which was near Wells Fargo. When they arrived, they learned he was inside and had access to a gun.

Additional officers were called, and surrounding apartments were evacuated, as authorities attempted to negotiate with the suspect.

Police said they heard a single gunshot inside the apartment after Givens ended contact with them. Officers then entered and found the body.
