Hoover 17-year-old accused of armed robbery during sale brokered on social media
A Hoover teen is being held without bond after police say he robbed someone with whom he had connected through social media to sell an item.
Officers responded Sunday to a report of an armed robbery in the 3600 block of Log Trail Drive, said Lt. Daniel Lowe. The victim had gone to that location to sell undisclosed property to the 17-year-old boy in a deal brokered on social media.
Instead, police said, the teen robbed the seller at gunpoint.
Investigators identified the suspect, who then surrendered to detectives on Thursday.
Lowe said a second suspect – a young, Black female – is also believed to have been involved and police are still working to try to identify her.
The 17-year-old is being charged as an adult, but police are not releasing his name. He is awaiting transfer to the Jefferson County Jail.
Anyone with additional information on the case is asked to call Det. Kevin Morris at 205-444-7615.
Police officials reminded the public to be vigilant when conducting internet exchange transactions and to remember the following safety tips:
• Be extremely careful conducting business with someone you do not know and use common sense.
• Meet in a well-lit, public area. The City of Hoover provides numerous locations for this at various fire stations and Hoover City Hall.
• Try to avoid meeting at night if possible.
• There is safety in numbers so try to avoid meeting alone if possible.
