Homewood police officer shot while leaving for work; standoff with armed suspect ongoing

A Homewood police officer was rushed to UAB Hospital after he was shot early Sunday.

The shooting happened shortly after 4:30 a.m. in Moody.

Homewood police Sgt. John Carr said the officer, who joined the department about a year ago, was in uniform and getting into his marked patrol vehicle about to head to work.

Some fired at least two shots at the officer. He was struck once and got on his police radio to report that he had been shot.

The shooting happened in the 2700 block of Ashley Manor in Moody.

The officer is in stable condition at UAB Hospital.

Carr said a motive has not yet been determined.

Moody police were involved in a standoff at townhomes near Moody Elementary later Sunday morning. As of 10 a.m., the suspect, armed with a rifle, was not in custody yet.

The State Bureau of Investigation is also en route to the scene.
