Homemade explosive device kills Mississippi man, sheriff says
A 27-year-old George County, Miss., man was killed when an apparent homemade explosive device went off last Thursday.
George County Coroner identified the dead man as Robert Jerome Rockwell Jr. According to Rockwell’s Facebook profile, he was a native of Eight Mile, Ala., and graduated from George County High School in 2015.
George County deputies responded to a residence on Nicholson Lane in the Bexley community of George County about 5:30 p.m. last Thursday after receiving a call for an unresponsive male.
Deputies arriving at the scene found Rockwell in the yard of the residence, dead from “significant wounds” from an apparent explosive device. Investigators found paraphernalia consistent with the making of homemade explosive devices in the surrounding area.
The Biloxi (Miss.) Police Department’s bomb squad was brought in to ensure the area was clear of any other explosive device.
In addition to the George County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacoo and Firearms are investigating the case.
