Homeless man assaults and robs man in wheelchair, Mobile police say
A 60-year-old homeless man assaulted and robbed a man in a wheelchair at a Dairy Queen in Mobile, according to police.
Officers were called to the restaurant on Government Street just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday on a report of a robbery.
Police said the men argued before the suspect, later identified as Mark Viggo Maples, reportedly assaulted the victim and snatched his bag. Maples ran from the scene, but a witness and the victim gave a description to police, who found Maples a short time later.
As of Friday morning, Maples remained in the Mobile Metro Jail with bail set at $3,000 on a robbery charge.
Maples was charged in April with misdemeanor theft, another in a long string of low-level arrests dating to 1985, according to Mobile jail records.
Over those years, Maples has been charged with multiple counts of theft, assault, drug possession, breaking and entering, receiving stolen property, DUI, parole violations, harassment, criminal mischief, forgery, credit card fraud, resisting arrest, domestic violence and trespassing, as well as a litany of traffic violations.
