Homeless Florida man jailed after allegedly threatening people with machete

A 50-year-old Florida man is in jail, charged with aggravated assault after he threatened at least three people with a machete Sunday, according to the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the area of Mobile Highway and Lynch Street in Pensacola Sunday after a report of a man with a machete.

The suspect — later identified as Everett Lamont Norman — had fled the scene in a black Chevrolet Tahoe prior to deputies arriving on the scene.

A short time later, however, the vehicle was spotted near the intersection of Cervantes and Baylen streets, where Norman reportedly waved the machete out of the vehicle window in the direction of the deputies.

Ultimately, deputies initiated a traffic stop and Norman was taken into custody without further incident. It was discovered the Chevy Tahoe he was driving had been taken from someone who has an active domestic violence injunction against him.

Norman, who is listed as homeless on the Escambia County Jail docket, remained jailed as of Monday morning, charged with both aggravated assault and violating the domestic violence injunction. His bail was set at $15,100 and he has a court date set for May 12.
