Hollywood reacts to Val Kilmer, star of Tombstone, Top Gun, dead at 65: ‘You truly were an icon’

Actors have taken to social media to mourn the death of Val Kilmer, who died Tuesday in Los Angeles at 65.

The “Tombstone” and “Top Gun” died from pneumonia. He had recovered after a 2014 throat cancer diagnosis that required two tracheotomies.

The legendary actor starred alongside Kurt Russell and Bill Paxton in 1993’s “Tombstone” and as a bank-robbing demolition expert in Michael Mann’s 1995 film “Heat” with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

Then, of course, he played pilot Tom “Iceman” Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise director Tony Scott’s “Top Gun.”

Here is just a sampling of the reaction from actors and celebrities.

“See ya, pal,” Josh Brolin posted on Instagram. “I’m going to miss you. You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those. I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there. Until then, amazing memories, lovely thoughts.”

“While working with Val on ‘Heat’ I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character. After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news,” filmmaker Michael Mann posted on Instagram.

“RIP Val Kilmer,” Josh Gad posted on Instagram. “Thank you for defining so many of the movies of my childhood. You truly were an icon.”

“RIP Val Kilmer,” Matthew Modin posted on X. “If it wasn’t for our chance encounter at the Source in 1985, I may never have been cast in FULL METAL JACKET. Thanks, Val.”

“Val Kilmer was the most talented actor when in his High School, and that talent only grew greater throughout his life,” Francis Ford Coppola posted on Instagram. “He was a wonderful person to work with and a joy to know — I will always remember him.”
