Hollis Wright Birmingham Week 12 top player decided by 19 votes
Participants in the Week 12 Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week poll delivered one of the closest results ever with just 19 votes separating the top two players.
Corner running back Spencer Unruh gathered 3,477 of the 10,862 votes in the poll to take the top spot over Ramsay running back Ashton Ashford, who had 3,458. Unruh had 32.011 percent of the total while Ashford earned 31.836 percent.
Unruh, a 6-foot, 171-pound sophomore, ran 29 times for 179 yards in the Yellow Jackets’ 42-21 win at Randolph in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.
He is the fourth Corner student-athlete to be voted Player of the Week after Austin Reid, Jace Boyd and Brendan Conner.
Ashford, a 5-9, 180-pound senior who is committed to Alabama State University, scored two touchdowns on 11 carries for 129 yards as the second-ranked Rams blanked West Point 50-0 in the 5A playoff opener.
Leeds defensive back Jeremiah Hall finished third in the poll. The 5-10, 170-pound senior intercepted two passes and had six tackles in a 33-7 win over Arab. One of Hall’s picks – that netted 68 yards – went for a touchdown. Leeds plays at Ramsay in this week’s second round of the 5A playoffs.
Voting for the Hollis Wright Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.
In Week 12, more than 60,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
