Hollis Wright Birmingham Player of the Week for Week 2 piled up yards in big win
Class 6A second-ranked Parker rolled over No. 8 Mountain Brook on the road on Friday, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the Week 2 Hollis Wright Birmingham Football Player of the Week.
Terence Gaines, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound running back, ran for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the 30-16 win. The senior had 14 carries on the night.
Gaines earned 39,835 of the 71,437 votes cast in the poll. His total was 56 percent of the total.
Parker improved to 2-0 with the win over the 1-1 Spartans, who were 8-4 last season and made it to the second round of the playoffs. The Thundering Herd opened the season with a 41-12 rout of 2023 Class 5A state playoff runner-up Ramsay. Parker plays at Gardendale to open Region 5 play on Friday.
Leeds quarterback Conner Nelson was second in the voting with 20,997 ballots cast – 29 percent. Nelson ran 15 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns and completed 4-of-6 passes for 41 yards in a 28-19 win over 6A Shades Valley.
The fourth-ranked Class 5A Green Wave is 2-0 on the season and opens Region 6 play at Springville on Friday.
Corner’s Spencer Unruh finished third in the weekly poll. The junior running back rolled up 249 yards and three scores on the ground on 16 carries and added a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 35-18 win over rival Dora. The Yellow Jackets are 2-0 and will open Class 5A, Region 5 play at Wenonah on Friday.
